String Band with Jill Newton
String Band welcomes new members! Come and enjoy Main Street Arts’ longest running educational class. Play your instrument in a group setting and practice traditional square dance and fiddle tunes from around the world. Jill provides most of the music, choosing selections that are accessible but still beautiful, while at the same time keeping the group focused and in tune. She also guides less-experienced musicians through difficult passages. Most of all, however, Jill creates a joyful atmosphere and makes sure everyone is having fun. The String Band has built up quite a repertoire over the years and has taken their music to other venues besides MSA. For many years they’ve performed in the Saxtons River Fourth of July parade and on the bandstand, at Main Street Arts annual picnics, and outside fundraisers for MSA. All string instruments are welcome. Wednesdays 5:00 - 6:15pm $70 per session $12 Drop-ins welcome Newcomers may attend a complementary class to check it out. |
Jill Newton If there’s something happening at Main Street Arts, which is usually the case, Jill Newton most likely has a hand in it. As a musician, artist, and instructor, not to mention a board member for many years, she’s been an important presence at MSA since its inception, and her contributions over the years have taken a variety of forms. Anything involving music probably includes Jill, whether it’s accompanying songs for the Winter Holiday program or playing for the cabarets and other musical productions. Her fiddling, both as a solo player and in an ensemble, gives a harmonious lift to every performance.
