Circlesinging, Vocal River, Musica do Circulo workshop
Date: Saturday, Feb 1st
Time: 10-4
$50/person
INFORMATION: Collaborative Vocal Improvisation (CVI) is an approach to group singing that emphasizes spontaneous, shared music-making without a pre-written song, composer, or conductor. Participants engage in deep listening to themselves, each other, and the space around them, fostering emergent leadership and creativity. Although improvisation can be intimidating, it's also exhilarating and nourishing. This beginner-intermediate introduction is for those with little to no improvisation experience who are open to exploring vocal expression.
To join, participants should be able to sing in tune and keep a beat. Vocal Improvisation helps build confidence, reduce self-judgment, and nurtures a deeper appreciation for one's voice.
Teacher Description: Since 2011, when Paris first encountered Circlesinging in a weeklong workshop with Bobby McFerrin, she has been deeply involved in this dynamic art form, studying both with McFerrin and members of his renowned group, Voicestra. In addition, Paris has expanded her practice by exploring Musica do Círculo, a parallel musical tradition from Brazil that has emerged alongside the international Circlesinging communities, with studies in both Brazil and the United States. While Paris was formally trained in Vocal Performance and spent much of her early singing career performing traditional songs from the British Isles and America, her encounter with Bobby McFerrin marked a transformative moment in her musical journey. Inspired by the power of improvisation, she shifted her focus to leading and creating spontaneous, collaborative music.
As a member of the ensemble VoicExchange, Paris has facilitated monthly Circlesinging sessions in the Baltimore/DC area, maintaining this tradition even throughout the challenges of the pandemic. The songs created during this time have since been compiled into an album, Full Circle, capturing the creative spirit of their online and in-person gatherings.
