​The wonders of watercolor

Whether you've never picked up a paintbrush, are returning after years away, or just want to dabble, this five-week course is here to guide and encourage you in a fun, informative way. Each class is two hours long and includes a short tea and cake break. All supplies are provided.

  • Week one: We'll touch on the basics of color theory by creating our own color wheels; then we'll talk about paints, papers and brushes, before selecting a color palette and our first picture. We'll finish up by creating blocks of color to use in next week's class.
  • Week two: I think this might be my favorite class; we'll dive into tools and mark-making and then on to textures and techniques. I have a smorgasbord of pens, pencils, paints, markers, and more that everyone is invited to play with. We'll finish up this fun class by creating a background sheet to use in next week's class.
  • Week three: This week we're creating tiny treasures. We'll take our background sheets and cut them into 2” squares and then use our new mark-making skills to create little, finished works of art; then you'll learn how to turn them into gift tags, Christmas ornaments, cards, or framed gifts.
  • Week four: We'll spend this class creating small landscapes (or abstracts) using the techniques you learned in lesson two. You'll be amazed at how easy it is to create your own little masterpieces.
  • Week five: Journey's end; now that you know the basics of watercolor, I'd love for you to continue, so we finish up with a watercolor journal and a thirty-day challenge. We'll talk about using your new journal, do a few pages, and learn some tips on getting the most out of journaling.
Joan is a self-taught, slightly late-blooming creative soul who loves sharing the joy she has found on her artistic journey. She has taught many classes in both Westchester, New York, and Vermont on a variety of creative subjects. Her passion for painting was reawakened a few years ago after taking an acrylics class (shout out to Debbi Wetzel!), and it wasn't long before she found herself helping others (re)discover the magic of self-expression through art.
