​Landscape Design Basics
Join landscape architect Scott J. Morgan to explore the basics of landscape design and the process of transforming your wish list of garden ideas and goals for your property into reality by putting pencil to paper. 

Instructor Scott J. Morgan has over 45 years of experience as a designer, project manager, gardener, and licensed Landscape Architect in Florida and Washington state. Scott taught Landscape Design/Construction at Edmonds Community College and was a featured lecturer at the Northwest Flower and Garden Show. He is also a working musician and artist and has exhibited nationally, including here at MSA. Scott resides in southern Vermont where for the past 17 years he has been designing, building, and maintaining gardens as ‘The Artistic Gardener’. 

​Session 1 – Overview of the design process
  • Creating a plan or sketch that documents the existing features of the property, i.e., footprint of the home, trees, garden beds, fencing, parking area, etc.
  • Analyzing your site for all the environmental constraints and opportunities, i.e, views, slopes, drainage issues, sun/shade, wind direction, etc. 
  • Creating a ‘Wish List’ of all desired elements, both aesthetic and practical, i.e., pizza oven, water feature, vegetable garden, privacy screen, meditation area, hiding the trash cans, etc.
  • Creating a ‘bubble diagram’ sketch to layout the approximate location of the ‘wish list’ elements and their relation to each other on the site.
Note: Participants will have an opportunity over the break to practice measuring their property, and sketching out their ideas. 

Session 2 - Putting it all together
  • Discussion of design principles for hardscape (patio, retaining walls, pathways, etc.) and landscape (garden beds, trees, shrubs, lawn) elements and plantings.
  • Discussion of basic planting design concepts.
  • Documenting the final shape, size and dimensions of all desired elements in a sketch or scaled drawing. Choosing materials, colors, and plantings.

Note: Participants will have an opportunity to share photos of their properties and examples of their work to get feedback and ideas from the group and instructor. ​
