With Andrea Bredbeck
This is a writing class. Interactive by design, you will be writing a short piece during the week before our class meetings. Our actual time together will be spent sharing our work, giving and receiving constructive critique, asking and receiving thoughtful questions, and most importantly, respectfully sharing (some of) our work, our thoughts, our experiences, and our stories.
We are all human: simultaneously mortal and conscious; thus we must craft lives that include change and loss. It has been culturally accepted that certain stories are better left untold. That particular griefs are better left unfelt. That even certain joys are better left unshared. Yet we live with the aftermath of our experiences every day. How fascinating that during this time when we are all experiencing some sort of upheaval, possible fear, possible engagement with the mortality of both ourselves and others, and the awarenesses that come with an acute focus on change, that conversation has generally become more honest and open.
In this class, we will attempt to flip the frame on our societal sanctioning of silence and isolation, and instead, write, explore, speak, harvest, and share (some of) our stories. We will also focus on how to write, listen, and both give and receive positive critique.
