Commedia dell'arte at MSA

​Director Sean Roberts is putting together two exciting new theater troupes at MSA inspired by Commedia dell'arte - one for adults, and one for middle and high school students. Both groups will learn the machinations of Commedia dell'arte, and perform improvisational Masked theater at Main Street Arts and beyond. 

Auditions for the troupes will take place on August 1 and 15th. Middle and high school students will audition between 5- 7 pm and adults will audition between 7-9:30 pm. Those auditioning will be expected to perform improvisational scenes together, and move through space as different stock characters that come from classic Commedia. Line memorization is unnecessary since all dialogue is in gibberish. Actors will use a collection of short scripts as guides during performances, and also perform completely improvisational scenes together. Over the course of each year, specific weekend workshops will be devoted to particular aspects of Commedia.

Both groups will meet on the first, third, and fourth Monday of each month. A youth group will meet from 5-7 pm and an adult group will meet from 7-9:30 pm. The adult actors/techies will be paid for performances through the equal splitting of ticket sales after venue expenses are tallied. The adult troupe will have up to 14 performers and 2 techies. Every 6 months, the adult troupe will hold auditions again for new performers and to have a fresh restart of characters played.
