Chinese Calligraphy with Jonathan Root
Learn the basics of Chinese calligraphy, focusing on the work of Ou Yang Xun 歐陽詢, one of the great calligraphers of the Tang Dynasty. You will learn the basics of character development, stroke order, and structural integrity. Calligraphy is a meditative practice which focuses the spirit into the brush, each stroke reflecting the state of mind of the writer. Session I, Saturday June 4, 11,18 10-12 noon Session II, Saturday July 2, 9, 16 10-12 noon $75 per Session + supplies $135 for both Sessions + supplies Regarding supplies: Ink and paper are provided. Brushes vary in price, for example mixed hair brush or here. The mixed hair is the common brush of choice in China for regular script calligraphy. The charge is $5 for basic supplies and more if a brush is requested. The charge for supplies can be paid directly to the teacher during class. |
Jonathan Root Jonathan Root grew up in Chester Vermont. He began learning Chinese calligraphy in China, where he lived for two years. He holds a BA in mathematics from the College of the Holy Cross and a PhD in mathematics from Boston University.
